Born in New London on June 22, 1936, he was the son of the late Powhatan H. Mitchell, Sr. and Grace Scott Jordan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Iris Coffey Mitchell; his second wife, Beckie Orr Mitchell; and his brother, Charles Edward Mitchell.
He is survived by his son, Bryan Mitchell and his wife, Vivian; his daughter, Wanda Mitchell; six grandchildren, Kevin Mitchell (Jennifer), Paula Elliott, Ryan Mace (Erin), Mindy Hood (Detrick), Jared Mace, and Dallin Mace (Meagan); and eleven great-grandchildren.
P.H. was a man of deep faith, unwavering dedication, and quiet strength. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, carrying with him a lifelong sense of duty and patriotism. Following his military service, he devoted over 30 years of faithful work to the United States Postal Service, earning the respect of colleagues and friends through his strong work ethic and dependability.
His faith was the cornerstone of his life. As a longtime member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, P.H. served faithfully as an usher for more than 50 years. He greeted countless individuals with a warm smile and a servant’s heart, reflecting his deep love for his church and his Lord. His commitment to serving others was evident in every aspect of his life.
Outside of his work and church, P.H. found joy in the simple pleasures. He took great pride in maintaining a perfectly manicured lawn, a reflection of his diligence and care. He was also an avid baseball fan, enjoying the game for the love of it rather than allegiance to any one team. Above all, he cherished his family and the time spent with those he loved.
P.H. will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, faithful servant, and a man who lived his life with humility, purpose, and enduring faith.
A service celebrating his life and faith will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Thomas Road Baptist Church with Pastor Jonathan Falwell officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 6, 2026, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
