

Richard was born on May 6, 1931 in Jamestown, New York, to the late Zoe Elizabeth and Roy Earl Lillard and his step-mother, Jessie Comstock Lillard. He was an engineer with HK Porter and retired from Erico Rail Products. He was also a Virginia State High School Football Official for 40 years. Richard was a member of Hyland Heights Baptist Church for 43 years and served as a deacon and trustee. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathryn Hope Smith, and his brother, William O. Lillard.
Along with his wife Betty, Richard is survived by three sons: Stephen Lillard, and his wife Sue of Wasilla, AK, Joel Lillard, and his wife Kemper, and Richard Lillard, Jr., all of Lynchburg; one daughter, Melissa Johnson, and her husband Joel, of Fortaleza, Brazil; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Lou Barlow, of Fredonia, New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, November 12, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Hyland Heights Baptist Church with Pastor Carl Weiser and Dr. Frank Schmitt officiating. Burial will follow at Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 11, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the residence.
