

Walter Nathan Gowen, 94, of Lynchburg passed away Monday, August 28, 2017, at the Appomattox Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Odelle O’Brien Gowen. Born June 13, 1923, in Nelson County, he was the son of the late Walter Coles Gowen and the late Rhoda Tyree Gowen.
Nathan was a retired maintenance employee for A.B. Burton Construction Company, where he served for 34 years. He was a member of Amazing Grace Ministries.
In addition to his wife and parents, Nathan was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Gowen and George Steen; and four siblings, Ed Gowen, Mae G. Bryant, Virginia Jones and Russell Gowen.
Nathan is survived by three children, Jean Gowen of Lynchburg, Ed Gowen (Pat) of Spout Spring and Donald Steen (Verna) of Bedford; one daughter-in-law, Helen Steen of Bedford; fourteen grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 31, 2017, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Bill Evans and the Rev. Mark Grooms officiating. Interment will follow at Tree of Life Cemetery in Altavista.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
