January 8, 1948 – May 15, 2025
Charles Benjamin “Chuck” Collings Jr., a proud U.S. Navy veteran, devoted husband, and beloved grandpa, passed away peacefully on May 15th, 2025, in Mabank, Texas, where he spent his later years surrounded by the people and place he loved.
Born on January 8, 1948, in the state of Maine, Chuck often joked, “Don’t hold it against me—I got to Texas as fast as I could,” a line that perfectly captured his humor and love for his adopted home state.
Chuck served his country with honor as an E-3 in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1969. After his military service, he continued a life of dedication and hard work, serving for many years as a correctional officer. Later, he hit the open road and found freedom behind the wheel as a truck driver, eventually retiring from the profession he took great pride in.
In the final chapter of his life, Chuck experienced a powerful spiritual renewal and became a born-again Christian. His faith brought him deep peace, a sense of purpose, and a renewed joy that shined brightly to those around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dorothy Collings; his brothers, Harvey, John, and William; and his beloved wife, Sherrill—known lovingly as “Nanny.”
Chuck is survived by his sister Linda of Iowa, sister Joyce of New Mexico, and brother Patric of Iowa.
To those who knew and loved him, Chuck was more than a veteran or hard worker—he was Grandpa. He had a sharp wit, a warm heart, and a love for the simple joys in life. He was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers fan, always ready with a cheer (or a groan) depending on how the game was going. He enjoyed classic Westerns and could spend hours watching his favorite shows. And if a John Candy movie was playing, you could be sure he’d be quoting every line, usually before the actor even said it.
Chuck leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, faith, and grit—along with a large circle of family, friends, and memories that will carry his spirit forward for years to come.
