After a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer, Betty Ann Kozel, retired teacher, seasoned traveler, and avid Cubs fan, passed away peacefully in her favorite recliner at home with family and friends at her side on Thursday, July 25, 2019.
Betty was born in Rockford, IL on December 16, 1953 to Janet and John Kozel. She earned her B.S. and Master’s Degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. She touched countless lives during her more than 40+ years of teaching high school courses in the Rockford Public Schools and college courses. When planning a night out with Betty, one needed to be 10 minutes early and add extra time, because she was guaranteed to meet a former student or co-worker in the community.
Betty hosted weekly dinners and holiday suppers without fail. She loved to cook for family and friends. She leaves the honor of Christmas dinner to her brother and her friend Cindy Nelson.
Her passion for travel was obvious by the many trips she took, and she made sure to collect a t-shirt from every location. The Great Smoky Mountains were a favorite place for her to hike and explore. In addition, Gettysburg held a special place in her heart along with all things Civil War.
Betty’s love for the Cubs no doubt came from her own experience as an exceptional and competitive athlete. She excelled at softball, tennis and despite her illness, added pickleball to her list of sports.
Betty is survived by her brother, Edward M. Kozel (of Rockford), her sister, Dr. Linda K. Hegstrand (of East Grand Rapids, MI), and many other family members and numerous friends.
A celebration of life ceremony is planned for August 10, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd., Machesney Park, IL 61115. The ceremony will be officiated by long time friend, Pastor Ben Ling. A visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Carpenter’s Place are suggested.
