

Donald G. Stone, Sr., 76Rockford, died on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 17, 1933 in Rockford to Charles and Edith (Lund) Stone. Married Karen Knodle on March 23, 1962 in Freeport, IL. Don was a 50-year lifetime machinist, working at Barnes Drill, Sundstrand, IMTA, and Ingersoll. He was a proud machinist and musician union member. Being a musician was his life long passion and he lead and played in numerous local bands, including The Lancers. He was the oldest confirmed member of Zion Lutheran Church and also served on the church council. The family would like to thank Dr. Esfahani, the staff at Northern Illinois Hospice, and the staff at Swedish American Oncology Dept for their kindness and compassion.Survived by his wife, Karen; children, Linnea (Rocky) Rydeberg, Donald (Arlene) Stone, Jr., Carolyn Doerr, Michael Stone, David (Denise) Stone, Kristin Geary; grandchildren, Rocky Rydeberg, Jr., Jennifer Rydeberg, Jessica Rydeberg, Donald Stone III, Erik Stone, Mikita Stone, Jill Beaton, John Doerr, Rachel Stone, Evan Stone, Carley Stone, Mason Geary; many great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. Predeceased by parents; brothers, Russell and Paul Larson, Robert and William Stone.Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, officiated by Pastor Michael Thomas. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2010 and from 9-10 a.m. on Friday before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family.
