

Born on June 10, 1932, in San Francisco, California, Pat graduated from Alhambra High School and went on to earn an engineering degree from UCLA. Following graduation, Pat served in the Army at White Sands Proving Ground before beginning his long and successful career in the aerospace industry. On June 27, 1953, he married the love of his life, Joan Cantarano, and together they built a life with seven children which was deeply rooted in faith and love.
Pat was a man of deep faith, service, and integrity. He was a longtime parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a Eucharistic Minister. After retiring from Sundstrand Corporation, he gave generously of his time and talents by serving with kindness and compassion as a volunteer at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center and as a math tutor. Pat was also a very generous man, feeling called to donate to a variety of charities.
Pat had a true passion for life and his family. He cherished every family gathering and celebration, always surrounded by laughter and love. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling, golf, reading, jigsaw puzzles, playing pool, and woodworking. He was also very proud to be an Eagle Scout.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan, of nearly 72 years, and by his children: Paul (Michele), Pat (Sherri), Tom (Traci), Larry (Margie), Maureen Maguire (Jim), Dennis (Trina), and son-in- law Gael Shafer (Peggy). He also leaves behind his sister MaryAnne Brower (Jim), 22 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents Cyril Gendron and Mary Patrick, daughter, Karen Shafer, and brother, Jerry Gendron.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 8, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, IL, with a rosary and prayer service beginning at 5:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 9, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Road, Rockford, IL. The burial, with full military honors, will be held on Wednesday, June 25, at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 8800 N Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, IL.
Faith and family were the cornerstones of Pat’s life. He served compassionately, gave generously, and loved passionately. His legacy will live on in the love of his family and the many lives he has touched.
