

Hazel J. Friel, 101, Rockford, passed away on March 22, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 14, 1914 in Rockford, the daughter of James and Josephine (Ingwalson) McCartney. She was married to Edwin W. Friel on June 20, 1936. He predeceased her July 8, 1971. Hazel attended Rockford Central High School. Hazel owned and operated Netta Gene Health Food Stores for over 25 years. She was one of the first females to own a business in Rockford. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. She was passionate about her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were a very important part of her life. Hazel was witty, loved to play cards, travel, read and do crossword puzzles. She also loved to watch the birds at her many bird feeders. She is survived by her son Larry (Jane) Friel, grandchildren Kris (Thomas) Clark, Kelly (Holly) Friel, Kari (Neil) Vincer, Mark Friel, great grandchildren Josh and Jaryd Magnuson, Jordan and Sean Friel, Brock, Brianna and Bailey Vincer, brother Allen McCartney, daughter-in-law Judi Friel as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her son Terry Friel, granddaughter Kathy Card; brothers Woody and Robert McCartney, sisters Lillian Cox, Edna Jones, Ethel Sowl and Katherine Wigell. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday March 26, 2015 at Sunset Funeral Home with Dr. Chuck Olson, Pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church officiating.
