Joseph A. Messineo, 91, of Popular Grove, IL, formerly of Chicago, was called home Tuesday, August 27, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 11, 1927 in Chicago, the son of Salvatore and Margaret (Rotolo) Messineo. Joe married the love of his life, Marie Casaccio, on June 14, 1952 in Chicago. He was employed as a purchasing agent for many years. Joe was a devoted member of St. James Catholic Church, Belvidere, and Saint Pascal's Church, Chicago. He was a Chicago Cubs fanatic, but when he was drafted out of high school by the Chicago White Sox, he loved baseball so much he was even willing to play for the Southsiders, until an injury cut his minor league career short.
Joe enjoyed camping, puttering around the house, bowling and working outdoors. He also loved animals and had several neighborhood squirrels who visited him on a daily basis. He was known for his sense of humor, his teasing nature, and his ability to make people laugh. He MC'd a variety show for many years at St. Pascal's Church, an endeavor which involved the entire family. His signature song was, "Oh, Lord It's Hard to Be Humble," which he loved to serenade us with at every turn.
Joseph was the patriarch of the family who loved his wife, children and grandchildren and will be deeply missed.
Joe is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marie; children, Kathleen Messineo, Joseph (Tina) Messineo, Jr., Judith Messineo, Peggy (Rob) Czech, and Lori (Todd) Parker; grandchildren, Jeffry, Rebecca, Stefanie, Marty, Melanie, Matthew, Shelby and Luke; and great grandson Vinnie. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.,Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd., Machesney Park, IL 61115. A Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at St. James Church, 402 Church Street, Belvidere, IL 61008, with Father John Dearhammer officiating.
