Mary K. Hearns

Mary K. Hearns, 83, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Swedish American Hospital. Mary was born in Abingdon, Virginia, on April 24, 1941, to Reed and Katherine Byrd. Mary proudly served her country, as she joined the United States Marine Corps in 1963. While serving, she met the love of her life, Prince Hearns Jr., and they were married June 11, 1964. She was a long-time employee at Swedish American Hospital as an X-Ray File Clerk before retirement.

Mary was a tough woman, and stood for what she believed in. She was hardworking and loyal to those around her. Mary loved to cook, and loved her family being together around a meal. She also had a special love for cats- taking the time to nurture them, and even rehabilitate some. It would also be fair to say she had a particular admiration for Siamese cats.

Mary is survived by her sons, Prince III (Brenda), Jason (Yolanda), and Brandon (Kari); eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two more on the way; three nieces and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Prince Jr., in 2015; parents, Reed and Katherine; sisters, Ramsey Porter and Alma Anderson; brother, George Byrd.

A graveside service for Mary will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 2:00 PM, followed by military honors.
