Shirley E. Brees

Shirley Edith Brees, 90, of Rockford, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on Friday, February 14, 2020. Born December 11, 1929 in Dakota, IL. Daughter of Willard and Florence (Schoney) Wise. Graduate of East High School in 1947. United in Marriage to Edward F. Brees on May 22, 1948 in Rockford. He predeceased her on February 6, 2005. Employed by Swedish American Hospital for several years as a nursing assistant. Member of New Milford United Methodist Church for many years. Together with Edward, they shared many summers at their home in Lodi, WI. Shirley found great joy being outside tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She took extra special care of her cats that she loved very much as well.

Survived by her sons, Gary (Deborah) Brees and Michael (Jan) Brees; grandchildren, Eddie Brees, Michael Brees, Levi Darstaedt and Alecia (Nicholas) Hawl; great-grandchildren, Cadence and Nicolette; niece, Laurie (Michael) Ditto. Predeceased by her parents; spouse; sister, Margie Hodapp.

Family wishes to thank the Bud and Lois Kingsbury family for being special friends for the last 73 years. Special thanks to Northern Illinois Hospice, especially Lisa and Deanna for their loving care and to caregiver Lisa as well.

Celebration of Life Funeral Service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 20 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd, Machesney Park. Visitation at 9 a.m. until time of service.
