Shirley L. Van Aken, 86, of Roscoe, IL, formerly of Rockford, passed away peacefully, Wednesday morning February 24, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 9, 1934 in Lynchburg, VA, the daughter of John and Josephine (Ferguson) Quinn. Shirley married William E. Taylor and he preceded her in death in 1963. She went on to marry Harry Van Aken in 1974. Shirley was the co-owner of Van Aken Hydraulics and worked as a secretary for many years. She was the former member of Central Christian Church. Shirley was an avid reader and she always had a book in her hand. She enjoyed tending to her flowers in the garden.
Shirley is loved and missed by her son, Bill (Chelli) Taylor; grandchildren, Chad Portwine, Christi Taylor, William Taylor, Christian Portwine and Kariel Portwine; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Mary McKenna; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, William and Harry; children, Helen Portwine and Albert Taylor; as well as siblings, Raymon and John Quinn.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday February 26, 2021 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, IL 61115. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Northern Illinois Hospice.
