Sue met the love of her life, Jimmy, while working at the local grocery store. What started as a regular day at work turned into the beginning of a lifelong love. Sue and Jim got married on May 28, 1966 at Trinity Lutheran Church. They spent 59 beautiful years together. Sue went on to serve her community as a bank teller at First National Bank before transferring to First Bank of Loves Park as a teller supervisor. From there, she moved to the trust department at Amcore Bank and retired from their fraud department at the age of 62.
After she retired, Sue found real joy in her garden. She had a true green thumb, and her flowers were always blooming. She also loved country music, especially the 90s and you could usually find it playing while she worked on crafts, cooked something delicious, or relaxed with a good book. She had a way of making everything feel cozy and cared for.
Sue is survived by her husband, Jimmy H. Huckabee; daughters, Lori (Luke) Champion and Jennifer (Jay) Bretzinger; grandchildren, Katelyn (Andre Dusette) Champion, Brenna and Brady Bretzinger, and Sean Champion; and great-grandchildren, Talon and Soren Dusette. She was preceded in death by her dad, William A. Phoenix.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 from 1pm until the time of the Funeral Service at 2pm at Sunset Funeral Home (8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, IL 61115). Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donation be made to the American Cancer Society.
