

MACON – Alan J. Burkhalter, 84, died Sunday, October 10, 2010. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Riverside Cemetery, North Gate with the Rev. Ron Holland and Mrs. Holly Reeves officiating. The family will meet friends from 10:30 to service time on Tuesday at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Mercer University College of Liberal Arts, ATTN. University Advancement, 1400 Coleman Avenue, Macon, GA 31207.
Mr. Burkhalter was born in Savannah the son of the late George Lewis Burkhalter, Sr. and Henrietta Pierce Burkhalter, and had lived in Macon most of his life. He was a graduate of Lanier High School and served with the U. S. Navy in the Philippines during World War II. Mr. Burkhalter earned his BA degree at Mercer University, was owner and operator of Macon Plumbing, and was involved in building and development in Macon. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and a former member of the Elks and Kiwanis Clubs. Mr. Burkhalter was a founding member of Howard Community Club and was an early member of the Macon Archaeological Society.
Mr. Burkhalter was an officer of Ocmulgee Arts, Inc., founder of Multicut USA and the inventor of the Multicutter. He was most defined by his joy of life and his love of learning and problem solving….and his ready smile. Mr. Burkhalter was the brother of the late George Lewis Burkhalter, Jr. and Harry Hulbert Burkhalter.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Louise Hill Burkhalter; daughters, Louise “Lou” Tharpe Burkhalter Warren (James) and Julia “Sissie” Elizabeth Burkhalter Maffeo (Michael); grandchildren, James Isaac Warren, IV, Elizabeth Everitt Ousley Warren, Katharine Louise Hill Warren and Ellen Louise Maffeo; twelve nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, Tom Hill, Jr. (Amy) and Monroe T. Hill (Marie).
