Dr. Ann N. Hughes wife, mother, grandmother, Anmommy, Abuelita, and lifelong educator died Thursday, August 2, 2018 at her home. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, August 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church, Macon, Ga. The family will receive friends following the service. Private burial will be in Christ Church Memorial Garden. Memorial gifts may be made to any organization with which Dr. Hughes worked or to Mercer University, Christ Church, the American Cancer Society, Pine Point Hospice, or a charity of choice.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, Dr. Hughes moved to Macon, attending Lanier High School for Girls. Upon graduation, she enrolled at Mercer University where she was a proud member of Phi Mu and achieved her Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation, she worked for WBML as a copywriter where she met her soulmate, Otis Hughes, and they married in 1953. Together, they embraced Macon as their home, where they chose to raise their family.
Dr. Hughes spent the rest of her professional life in education, as a professor of Foreign Languages and Contemporary Literature at Mercer University for 30 years, serving as chairman of the department on multiple occasions. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in 1973, defending her dissertation on Religious Imagery in the Theater of Tirso de Molina. One of the great joys of her career was sharing her love of Spain with her students. During her tenure at Mercer, she created numerous study abroad opportunities for her students so that they could immerse themselves in Spanish culture.
She was a long time member of Christ Church where she served on many ministries and committees. She was a member of Daughters of the King, Appleton Family Ministries, and Stephens Ministry. She was a graduate of Education for Ministry (EFM) and the Disciples program. She later went on to teach several Disciples classes as well as other Bible and book studies.
Dr. Hughes is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Robert Ross (Richmond, Va.), grandchildren Catherine (New York, NY) and James (Arlington, Va.); her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Wendy Hughes (Macon, Ga), grandchildren Michael (Athens, Ga.) and Paige (Chicago, Il.); great grandchild, Hudson Otis Hughes (Athens, Ga); sister-in-law, Margie Hughes of Macon; niece and her family, Ellen and Kelly Shepard, Travis Shepard, Martin Shepard, and Meghan Johnson of Roswell, GA, and by the family of Christ Church.
The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers of Home Instead Senior Care, especially, Brandy, Deloris, Ebony, Patricia Savannah, Tanya, Vicki and Amy of Pine Point Hospice.
