A native of Macon, Georgia, Chester was the oldest of six sons. He is predeceased by his parents, Louise Ann Pierce and George Waldon Pierce and three of his brothers, Mark D. Pierce, Timothy D. Pierce and Kimsey L. Pierce and brother-in-law William Baldwin Davidson, Jr.
Chester was a lifelong member of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, and in later years he also attended Saint Peter Claver Catholic Church. He attended Saint Joseph’s Catholic School and was a 1966 graduate of Mount de Sales Academy. He attended Mercer University in Macon on a four-year baseball scholarship. While at Mercer, he was an outstanding second baseman for the Mercer Bears, he participated in the ROTC program and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1970 and a Masters of Education degree in 1972. Chester was employed at his alma mater, Mount de Sales Academy, in the fall of 1973 and enjoyed 37 years of being a part of a stellar and gifted faculty. He served as a teacher of history and social studies, coached varsity baseball, football, basketball, and girls softball and later served in administration as Dean of Students. For many years, he worked tirelessly as the founder and organizer of the annual Alumni Golf Tournament, raising funds and boosting loyalty for the school he loved. Mount de Sales presented him with the “Chester W. Pierce Lifetime Achievement Award”, which is now awarded to a deserving student each year. Always mindful of his parents’ sacrifices to provide a Catholic education, Chester was extremely proud to serve as a teacher, coach, administrator and mentor for so many young people.
He led his beloved Cavalier baseball teams to ten Region Championships, one State Runner-Up title and three State Baseball Championships in 1976, 1978 and 1980. As the softball coach his team won the 1985 GISA Class AAA State Championship and region titles in 1988 and 1992. Chester was recognized for his coaching achievements in 2007 when he was inducted in the Macon Sports Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Mount de Sales Academy Hall of Fame twice, once in 2007 as a member of the 1966 State Championship baseball team which earned the first State Championship in the school’s history as he drove in the winning run. He was inducted again individually in 2008 for his exceptional athletic ability. He was thrilled to be recognized in March of 2016 when the newly renovated baseball stadium was named in his honor, “The Chester Pierce Baseball Stadium”.
Chester was always happiest when he was enjoying the outdoors. Whether having a competitive day on the baseball field, rafting the Chattanooga River, surf fishing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, or playing golf with his lifelong pals, he knew how to get outside and love life. His energy was unmatched. After retirement in 2010, Chester discovered his love for distance walking and he spent many hours exploring the trails of the Ocmulgee Mounds National Park. He also became an active member of the Central Georgia Senior Golf Association.
Chester’s heart overflowed with love for his children and grandchildren. He was a soft-spoken, fun loving role model and was never too busy to get outside and play; consequently, he became the adored “Papa”.
Chester is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jody, daughter Carrie Pierce (Mark Hurley), son Benjamin Pierce (Melissa), grandchildren Amelia Jane Bush, Aidan Butler Bush, Ada Rose Pierce, Dylan Hurley and Samantha Hurley. He is also survived by his brothers Tony Pierce (Bunny), and Phillip Pierce, sisters-in-law Janie Pierce and Diana Davidson and many dear nieces and nephews.
