

Dorothy Wynn Joiner died peacefully November 17, 2010 after a short illness in St. Simons Island, GA with her daughters at her bedside. Dorothy Wynn Joiner was born February 28, 1922 in Henry County, Georgia, the daughter of the late Sara McKneeley Wynn and the late Morris Byron Wynn. She grew up in Macon and attended Bibb County Schools. She received an Associate degree from Georgia College at Milledgeville, Georgia.
Her devotion to her church, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), was manifest in her service as elder and Sunday school teacher until she was 86. She was a dedicated choir member and organ and piano accompanist for 60 years. She held positions of leadership in the Christian Women’s’ Fellowship as state president and multiple local positions. She devoted time to Meals on Wheels and served as President of the Vineville Towers Board. Her community service extended to over 50 years with Civic Women’s Club and 40 years as a Red Cross Volunteer. In her later years she read for the blind with the Georgia Radio Reading Service.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, John Gordon Joiner and her brother, Maurice Byron Wynn. She is survived by: her daughters Nancy Hiatt (Joe) and Lynn Lane; her grandchildren are Nancy Marie Lane Douglas (Dave), Michael Lane (Deb), Catherine Hiatt Martin (Jason), Dorothy Hiatt Luyendyk (Kevin), and Carol Hiatt Smith (Paul). Her great grandchildren Caroline Lynn and Brooklyn Grace Douglas, Gabriel Sinclair Lane, John Preston, Harrison Hiatt and Ella Catherine Martin, Thompson Joseph Luyendyk and two babies soon to be born.
Also surviving are her sisters-in-law Gloria Wynn and Helen J. Thomas and her brothers-in-law Henry Joiner and Buford Joiner plus numerous nieces and nephews, friends and family members. She is also survived by her dear friend, Mary Malcom, whose love and compassion meant so much to her, especially in her last years after moving to St. Simons Island to be with her daughter, Lynn.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Joiner/Wynn memorial fund at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 2306 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204. Services will be held at the First Christian Church at the address above, on Saturday at 11:00 am, with Rev. Lynn J. Lane and Rev. Mary L. Malcom presiding. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery next to her devoted husband. Visitation will be held Friday, from 5 to 7 pm at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, 746 Cherry Street, Macon, GA 31201.
