Dumont C. Bunn, age 79, made the journey to be with his loved ones and friends who have passed before him on October 31, 2015, following a period of illness. A resident of Macon since 1964, he was the son of Hazel Kitching Bunn and Cyril Hugh Bunn of Vero Beach, Florida and beloved grandson of Hattie Hall Bunn of Brunswick, Ga. He was born in Vero Beach, Florida on January 15, 1936. He grew up in Brunswick, Georgia, graduated in 1954 from Glynn Academy and joined the U.S. Marine Corp in June of 1954 during the Korean Conflict.
A 1959 graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts in English, he went on to obtain a Master of Librarianship degree from Emory University in 1961. He then joined the library faculty at Georgia State University as Assistant Head of Acquisitions, eventually becoming Head of the Catalog Department. During this time he met his wife, Christine and they married in 1964. They relocated to Macon where he served as the Assistant Library Director of the Stetson Memorial Library at Mercer University for many years.
Passionate about learning, he continued his education while at Mercer. After seeing the new Mercer Library to completion, he went on to pursue his PhD in Library and Information Studies, graduating in 1989 from Florida State University in Tallahassee. His dissertation was published and copies sold to other libraries. After completing his doctoral program, he worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as a Supervisor. In 2003, he returned to the Library field, accepting a position at the current Central Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins, GA. His work there as Library Director sustained him even as his health declined. Retirement was not a word in his vocabulary.
My Dad held a Private Pilot’s License for years and spent many peaceful afternoons flying out from Herbert Smart Airport tracing the Ocmulgee River. He was a member of Oconee Yacht Club and enjoyed sailing and being on the water. He was an avid photographer, winning several photography contests with the Macon Telegraph and News and the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. My Dad’s great interest in tracing his family ancestry led him to conduct extensive genealogical research and to the discovery of family roots in Georgia, Florida and Great Britain. His personal library was impressive, with a concentration of publications about his particular interest, WW II history. He took additional coursework in printing and publishing, this lead to the establishment of a small printing press through which three publications were issued.
Dr. Bunn held memberships in the UGA Alumni Association, the Emory Alumni Association, Georgia Library Association and Southeastern Library Association.
He was preceded in death by his Father, Mother and Grandmother. He is survived by his Wife of 51 years, Christine, daughter Kimberly (Charles), grandsons Wade and Austin Elliott, sisters JoAnn Baker (Fred) of Ft. Pierce, Fla, Mary Jane Guard (Curtis) of Vero Beach, Fla and numerous nieces and nephews.
Special Thanks to the staff and coworkers of Central Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins, Beverly Littlefield of Atlanta, Kim and Gary Powell of Macon, Eleanor Mosteller of Macon for their kindness and support.
