
MRS. JACK RIEVES MEADOWS
Mrs. Jack Rieves Meadows, Betty, 82, of Macon, Georgia and former resident of Brevard, North Carolina, died Monday, May 2, 2011. After a private graveside service, a memorial service will be held at Vineville Presbyterian Church (Strong Tower) on Friday, May 6th at 11 A.M. conducted by the Rev. Henry Hope. A visitation will be held Thursday, May 5th from 5 – 7 P.M. at Snow’s Memorial Chapel on Cherry Street. The family can be reached at the home of Gary and Laura Bechtel.
Mrs. Meadows, the former Laura Elizabeth Norris, was born in Macon, Georgia, the daughter of Laurine Cone Norris of Enon, Alabama and Atlanta and Albert Leo Norris of Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. She moved with her parents from Fort Valley, Georgia in 1930 when her father began his C.P.A. firm in Macon, January 1931.
“Betty” and “Jack,” 1946 graduates of Miller and Lanier, were married at St. Paul Episcopal Church in 1951. Their children and grandchildren are Dr. John R. Meadows and wife, Mary Joyce Baird, Andrew Norris Meadows, Mary Beth Meadows Anderson and Phillip, Emily Joyce Meadows Ellison and William and Jack Rieves Meadows III; daughter Laura Guerry Meadows Bechtel and husband Gary, Laura Tarver Bechtel and Samuel Rieves Bechtel.
Betty graduated from Queens College, Charlotte, North Carolina where she was President of Phi Mu Fraternity and member of Honor Council and May Day Chairman. In Macon she was active in many civic organizations including the Community Planning Council, Idle Hour Country Club, Morning Music Club, History Club of Macon, Junior League of Macon (past president) and the D.A.R. She was also a member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. After completing a Licensed Practical Nursing course, she served as a short term missionary to India.
