Born January 21, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Joseph W. Carlson and Florentine K. Pfeuffer Carlson, Gretta lived a life marked by strength, intelligence, grace, and quiet confidence—a true trailblazer. She was quick-witted, determined, and resilient, even surviving breast cancer with the same steadfast spirit she brought to everything she touched. Her poise and gentleness made her both a force to be reckoned with and one of the most well-rounded women her family and friends ever knew.
Gretta earned a Master’s Degree in Education and a Bachelor’s in Psychology, but the titles that mattered most to her were wife, mom, Peaches, and Nana. For sixty-four years, she was devoted to her husband, Roscoe Franklin Duncum Jr., raising four wonderfully wild children and later welcoming eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who adored her.
Above all, her faith anchored her. Even when her memory slipped, the truth she believed never left her. Her well-worn Bible, filled with notes and tucked with old receipts, testified to a faith that remained steady. She was a good and faithful servant, and her family holds full confidence that she is with God now, completely healed.
Gretta is survived by her beloved husband, Roscoe Franklin Duncum Jr.; her children Christopher Michael Duncum, Dianna Duncum Vann (John), Franklin Scott Duncum (Amy), and Katherine Duncum Lee (Chip); grandchildren Daniel (Victoria) Duncum, Riley (Ben) Persian, Tucker (Shelby) Vann, Tanner Vann, Cory-Lynn (Thorne) Thurston, Anna-Lee Duncum, Kennedy Lee, and Brayden Lee; and great-grandchildren Landon Duncum, Bentley Duncum, and Adeline Thurston. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Joseph W. Carlson Jr.
Her family is forever changed by her love and forever grateful for the years they were given. They are blessed beyond measure for the gift of her life. She will be missed more than words can express.
