

Rev. Hubert Wheeler, beloved minister and servant of God went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, March 24. A celebration of his life will be held at Pine Forest Baptist Church on Saturday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Russell Criswell, Rev. Brian Everett, and Rev. Jimmy Corbitt officiating. The family will greet friends at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday, March 26th from 6 to 8 p.m. Former members of choirs led by Hubert are invited to participate in a memorial choir to sing some of his favorite songs at the service on Saturday and are asked to arrive one hour prior to the service.
Hubert was born in Hawkinsville, GA to the late Henry Lee and Lillian Palmer Wheeler. He was a graduate of Lanier High School and Mercer University in Macon. Devoting 55 years of his career to serving God through the ministry of music, Hubert began serving as a volunteer in his home church, Bellevue Baptist Church and went on to serve numerous churches in the Middle Georgia Area including Thomaston Road Baptist (5 years), Avondale Baptist (5 years), Mabel White Baptist (15 years), Wesleyan Drive Baptist (1 year), Pine Forest Baptist (10 years), West Highland Baptist (12 years), and Lakeview Baptist (6 years). Other ministries include Chaplain for Blue Bird Corporation, Fort Valley, GA (15 years) and leadership positions with Georgia Baptist Convention, including Evangelism Department and Music. Hubert was the worship leader for the first four years of Super WOW Youth conferences at the Macon Coliseum. In 1969, the Filomenian Yearbook of the Medical School of Nursing Chorus of the Medical Center of Central Georgia was dedicated to him in tribute and salute to “a man dedicated to his God and his work.” Hubert directed the Medical School Nurses Chorus for 14 years.
Hubert led revivals in churches in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Louisiana and he led choir tours for youth for 36 consecutive years. He recorded several albums including an album of hymns, a youth choir album, and an album with the Medical Center School of Nursing Chorus.
The Bibb County Board of Commissioners declared June 27, 2006 as “Hubert Wheeler Day” in recognition of the many lives he has touched in the area…“Rev. Hubert Wheeler has become known as the epitome of a dedicated Christian serving his Lord and Savior by using his talents to glorify God and His Kingdom’s work.”
Hubert was preceded in death by his sisters, Annie Kate (Ellis) Worsham and Sarah Nell Coley and brothers, Rev. Buford (Ann) Wheeler and William Henry “Bucky” Wheeler.
Hubert is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce (53 years); son, Kevin (Lisa) Wheeler of Bolingbroke; daughter, Kim (Russell) Criswell of Arlington; brother, Dennis (Marci) Wheeler of Orlando, FL. Hubert adored his grandchildren, Lindsey, Hunter, Kinzee Grace Wheeler and Christopher and Chandler Criswell and many nieces and nephews.
