Jewell Slocum James was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother (“Maw”) and friend to many. She was born on November 22, 1925, in Coldwater, Mississippi. On January 17, 2022, at 96 years old, Jewell found peace and joined her loved ones in heaven.
Jewell attended the University of Mississippi where she majored in chemistry. She married the love of her life, Dr. Franklin Ward James, on November 1, 1958. They were joyfully married for 48 years until his death. They enjoyed traveling the world, photography, and giving back to the community by delivering Meals on Wheels. She was a dedicated member of Northminister Presbyterian Church and an avid Ole Miss football fan. Jewell was known for her warmth, kindness, generosity of spirit, and love of chocolate.
She is survived by her children: son, Craig Slocum James (Monica) of Decatur, Georgia; daughter, Nancy James Gillies of Perry, Georgia; and her grandchildren: Melissa Bozarth Martin (Keith), Kelly Paige Bozarth, Lucas Hare James, Janie Elyse Lewis (Alec), Thomas James Gillies; and her great-granddaughter, Zoey Grace Lewis.
Per the wishes of her family and for the safety of her friends during this time, the family will hold a private graveside service. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Franklin W. James Endowed Scholarship fund for chemistry majors, College of Liberal Arts, at Mercer University, 1400 Coleman Avenue, Macon, GA 31207.
