John William Bessman, Jr., 80, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Winchel officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery immediately following the service. A Rosary will be said on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry St. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 830 Poplar St., Macon GA 31201.
John was born in Augusta, GA to the late John William Bessman, Sr. and Ruth Redd Bessman and was one of ten children. John received his Bachelor of Science from Georgia Tech and his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from Catholic University. He was charter faculty at Macon Junior College, and then a research scientist for Scope Electronics (Reston, VA) for 25 years before returning to Georgia. John was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a lover of puzzles, Science Fiction, bagpipes, puns, a well-woven tale and a quick wit.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Ruth, brother James Bessman, and sisters Alice Fenn, Catherine Sluder, Margaret Keels, and Ruth DeLaGarza.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann (Orlando) Bessman of Macon; sons, Eric Bessman of Macon, Carl (Laura) Bessman of Round Rock, TX and Paul (Marcy) Bessman of Olathe, KS ; daughters, Joan (Kenneth) Taylor of Cedar Falls, IA, Lisa (Jeffery) Pleinis of Valrico, FL; and his grandchildren Zackary and Katherine Bessman; Walker, William and Warren Taylor; Ava and Abigail Pleinis; his sisters, Jackie Bessman, Patricia Lyons, Mary Vignati, Teresa Patterson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
