Marguerite "Margie" Hughes died March 25, 2024, after a brief illness, surrounded by family. She is now joyously reunited with her mother, father, brother, and numerous friends and family that went before her.
Margie was born June 13, 1923, in Augusta, Ga to Otis F. and Gladys M. Hughes. The family moved to Macon in 1936, and after graduating from Miller High School, Margie earned her degree from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville in 1946.
Margie began her storied teaching career at Gainesville High School, remaining there for 6 years before moving to Macon, where her dedication to education continued at Miller Junior High School until her retirement in 1976. Margie's passion for teaching extended far beyond the confines of the classroom. She spent 26 wonderful summers (1947-1973) as a counselor at Camp Dellwood in North Carolina. The friendships she made there stayed so strong through the years, that a group of campers came to Macon and surprised her for her 95th Birthday. It absolutely delighted her!
Margie was a member of First Baptist Church for over 80 years. In addition to her service there, Margie was a frequent volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Services, the Cherry Blossom Office, and Meals on Wheels.
Margie touched the lives of many people through her selfless and generous works in life. Margie was the first to offer assistance to a neighbor, friend, or family member who was in need of anything, whether it be a ride to a doctor's appointment, picking up groceries, or extending words of comfort during trying times. These acts of service was incredibly special to Margie and provided as much joy for her as it did for the people she was helping.
Margie was beloved by all who knew her during her remarkable 100 years. She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Otis F. Hughes Jr.; and his wife, Ann. She is survived by a niece, Laurie H. Ross (Robert) of Richmond, Va and a nephew, Richard M. Hughes (Wendy) of Macon.
Per her instructions, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to donor's charity of choice. Snow's Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street, has charge of arrangements.
