

Susan Alva Barge Powell, 92, passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2016 in Athens, Georgia. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 20 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Vernon Knight officiating. Burial will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Milledgeville at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery. A Vigil Service will be held on Sunday, June 19 at 7 p.m. at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street. The family will greet friends following the Vigil Service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Joseph Catholic Church or Family Advancement Ministry.
Susan was born and lived most of her life in Macon. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Alva Susan Cowan Barge and her husband, Philip Powell. Susan was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Coffee Group. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Susan worked as a forklift operator during the war. She retired as a telephone operator from Enterprise Answering Service. Susan was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters; Dorothy “Dottie” Susan Powell of Winterville, GA, Jeannie (Drew) Powell Marczak of Bogart, GA, and Elaine (Neil) Baer of Chapin, SC; nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
