Daniel Joseph O’Neill, 91, of Guilford CT, formerly of Stony Brook, NY, passed away on March 8, 2021. He was the husband of the late Hertha C. (Juli) O’Neill. He was born in New York City on May 25, 1929 to Mary (Burke) and David O’Neill. He was the son of Irish immigrants and he proudly embraced his heritage.
Daniel attended Chaminade High School and Sewanhaka High School on Long Island, NY and graduated in 1947. He honorably served in Korea as a member of the United States Air Force as a radar technician. He graduated from New York University on the G.I. Bill with a degree in Engineering while working full time.
Dan was a dedicated employee of Grumman Aircraft on Long Island where he starting working in the electronics assembly shop. He retired as a Senior Vice President having been Program Director of the EA6B aircraft, and then the F-14 fighter jet. His team also designed the antenna system for the Lunar Excursion Module, a source of great pride to him.
He loved Hertha, and his children. He moved his growing family from Mineola, NY to Stony Brook, NY in 1963 to provide them with a small-town life. He was always supportive of his six children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Daniel was an avid gardener. He provided an abundance of vegetables for his family, friends and coworkers. He enjoyed boating, skiing and golf.
Daniel is survived by his children Daniel (RI), Anne Kolyer (MD), Douglas (NJ), Jane (VT), Patricia Ricks (NY) and Peggy Butler (CT), their spouses and companions, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Marion Jablonski (MA).
