Edwin Crampton Mallory, 72, passed away on April 10, 2015. He was born on May 18, 1942 to John and Lois Mallory, and grew up in West Hartford, CT. He graduated from Loomis School in 1960 and from Colgate University in 1964. After receiving his MBA from Stanford in 1966, he returned to West Hartford to work at the Hartford National Bank. In 1978, he joined his brother Wick to work at his father’s business, Mallory Industries, later becoming President and Chief Financial Officer. Ted valued his employees and the sense of community that he and Wick created at work and he appreciated the opportunity to interact daily with his brother.
A longtime resident of Madison, CT, Ted was a dedicated member of his community. Ted’s list of public services runs long. He was a former President of the Board of the Madison Public Library, a past member of both the Madison Board of Education and the Madison Board of Finance, and was involved at the Deacon John Grave House. He was also a member of the CBIA and Greater Hartford Jaycees.
Ted was also enthusiastic about the wider world around him. An avid traveler, his eagerness to experience different corners of the world was infectious. Wherever he went, whether across the globe or to the Madison Coffee Shop, Ted made friends and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Anytime. He was genuinely interested in hearing the life stories of other people, and he had an indescribable way of making those he interacted with, from strangers to friends and family, feel valued and seen. His curiosity and quest for adventure were boundless. And his sense of humor and sharp wit caused everyone he encountered to walk away from him with a smile on their face.
Photography, music, history, integrity, and a good story …. These things were important to Ted. He recorded his life through photography. His trusty camera was never far from his side, and slide shows in the kitchen were eagerly anticipated. He was passionate about sports…but he had to have a team in the game … weather it be The Patriots, Red Sox, one of his alma matters or the UCONN huskies. While an adventurer who yearned to see new places and experiences, he also took great pride in his routines and values. Without fail, each morning began with his “road cup” of coffee from The Madison Coffee Shop.
Most important to Ted was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife and best friend Nancy – they had just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this past March; their daughters: Karin, Lynn, Liz, and Kate; son in-law Ray; and nine grandchildren: Hunter, Alexandra, Willing, Sadie, Eliza, Ella, Annie, Leo, and Teddy West; his brother and sister-in-law Wick and Brooke, sister Betsy and sister in-law and brother-in-law, Susan, and Phillip. He is survived by generations of extended family. His sister Judy and brother in-law Bruce predeceased him.
Ted lived large and well. He will be missed.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 17th, at 11am, in The First Congregational Church, 26 Meetinghouse Ln., Madison, CT, immediately followed by a reception at the Winter Club in Madison. Directions will be available. Donations can be made in his honor to The Madison Public Library.
