Esther Owens Watrous

Born June 5, 1926 Passage May 28, 2020

Esther Owens Watrous passed away early on May 28th due to complications from Covid-19. She died peacefully and contented, a few days after being reunited with her son and daughter-in-law after a lengthy quarantine.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Esther was the daughter of Attorney John J. Owens and Lou M. Decker. A prominent lawyer and politician, Owens served as District Attorney, Director of the Liquor Control Board, and Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, serving his good friend Governor Gifford Pinchot.

Esther married Frederic Arthur Watrous in 1950, and is survived by children Frederic, Jeffery, Karen Lucey, and Scott, and her two grandchildren Alden and Sadie. A graduate of Keystone Junior College, Esther resided in Clark’s Summit for 60 years, and traveled extensively with Fred. Esther moved in with Scott and resided in Old Saybrook CT since 2014. After breaking her hip, she spent the last 3 years at Apple Rehab in Old Saybrook, where she made many friends and shared her indomitable spirit and positive energy with patients and staff. She played cards every night with a grand group of friends who cherished her and the fun and laughter that surrounded her.

Due to the virus, no service will be held. Please post any thoughts or memories on Esther’s Facebook page.

Esther was a lovely lady, an excellent double solitaire player and a happy and caring person. Ed and I did enjoy cards with Esther and she almost always won.!!!!She loved her family so much and looked forward to Scott’s visit every night. She will be missed by so many who knew her.

Esther was a spitfire of a woman. I remember first witnessing her competitive spirit as she played cards with Sheila my mom and thought the two were quite a good match of temperaments and skill!

Her knitted hats were cheerfully distributed to all the teens around her, the pom poms and bright colors were Esther-signatures. My sons dutifully wore their Esther hats for at least 2 winter seasons!

Even though we met only a handful of times each year, she welcomed me each time with her loving presence even as she struggled to remember exactly how I fit in to her familial picture. Esther brought a love of life to her last years that I only hope to mimic and to her primary caregiver and son Scott, may I be so lucky as to have a child care for me with such devotion and humor, love and steadiness.
