John Sagnelli, 78, of Madison CT, beloved husband of Linda Sagnelli, died on February 24, 2024 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. John was born in Stamford, CT, on June 16, 1945 to Philip Sagnelli and Teresa Prizio. He went on to marry the love of his life, Linda, on June 26, 1993.
John graduated from Stamford Catholic High School in 1964 and then went on to graduate from Hofstra University in 1969. While at Hofstra, he wrestled and played football, serving as co-captain of the football team during his senior year. John continued his education, earning a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from Southern Connecticut State University in 1979.
John was a lifelong educator in History and Physical Education. He was a part time cross country, and track and field coach at Iona College while still teaching. In 1995, John retired from teaching to become the head cross country and track and field coach at the University of New Haven. He left New Haven in 2007 to become the head cross country coach at Fairfield University until his retirement in 2014.
John mentored and coached so many high school and college athletes over the years in the sports of cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, and football. He coached many All-American, All-New England, and All-Conference athletes, but what was most important was his passion for mentoring and his drive to push his athletes to be their best.
From 2014 to 2023 he served on the coaching staff of the Daniel Hand football team, participating in numerous championships including winning the 2023 State Championship.
John was a marathon runner who participated in the NYC marathon among many others. He was an avid sailor and skier, remaining active throughout most of his life.
His love for his family was first and foremost. As both he and Linda were college coaches, he always made time to be at all of his children’s events and was the number 1 fan and supporter of Linda’s volleyball coaching career.
John is predeceased by his brother Vincent Sagnelli.
John is survived by Linda, his loving wife, son, Matthew Sagnelli (fiancée, Lisa Michaels), his adoring daughter, Erin Sagnelli (boyfriend, Tevin Nanfito). He is also survived by his brother, Philip Sagnelli, his nephew Kenny, and niece Caroline, along with numerous cousins. John leaves behind many close friends from his journey through life. Each and every one of those friendships meant the world to him.
