Born on January 15, 1928, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Charles Heywood Saunders, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Nuckles Saunders. Charles retired from RH Feagans after 23 years of service. Charles enjoyed hunting and fishing but his greatest passion was blue grass music. He played with several groups such as James River 5, Bluegrass 76, and Jim Orange and the Orange Blossoms which he was with for 23 years.
In addition to his parents and wife, Charles was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
He is survived by children, Nancy Wooten and husband, Wilson, and Janice Vosburg and husband, Malcolm, Charles H. Saunders, III and wife, Wendy, and Russell Saunders; 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the funeral service starting at 12 pm. Pastor Peyton Fitzgerald will be officiating and interment will follow at Big Island Cemetery.
