

Clarence Reed Martin, 83, of Amherst, died, Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at Fairmont Crossing. He was born July 26, 1927 in Amherst County, son of the late Henley Reed and Florence (Staton) Martin. He married the late Opal Imogene Bryant Martin, April 16, 1960.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Martin is preceded in death by one brother, Gordon Martin and five sisters, Lauchee (Tee) Williams, Frances Mays, Elsie Mays, Lena Gross and Nellie Anderson.
Mr. Martin is survived by one daughter, Dr. Valerie Martin Conley and her husband Tom of Athens, Ohio; one son William Thomas Martin and his wife Valarie of Amherst; three sisters, Catherine Moore and her husband Tommy of Elon, Bessie Dean of Chesapeake and Dorothy Inge of Monroe; four grandchildren, Kincaid, Grace, Reed and Lindsay Martin; and close friend, Bill Cope of Amherst.
Mr. Martin was a veteran of the Korean War and also served in the 101st Airborne Division. He retired from Coleman and Adams Construction Company, where he served for 30 years. He was a member of Elon Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 29, 2011, at Elon Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Steve D. Tyree and the Rev. Dr. Michael Fitzgerald. Interment will follow at Elon Baptist Church Cemetery, where the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard will present Military Honors.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, January 28, 2011, at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at the residence of Tom Martin.
