

Frances Walters Swift, 79, of Amherst, passed away, Sunday, October 12, 2014, at the Heritage Inn of Charlottesville, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born June 7, 1935, in Stony Point, Albermarle County, she was the daughter of the late Alton Preston and Virginia Douglas Walters. She was also preceded in death by her brother-in-law, William Kerr Haddow.
Frances is survived by her husband of 54 years, John Gaylord Swift; two daughters, Sandra Swift Wolf and her husband Titus of Midlothian and Connie Swift Knotts of Charlottesville; three grandsons, John Walters Wolf, Brandon Swift Knotts and Kirkland Christin Knotts. She is also survived by a sister, Marion Walters Haddow of Charlottesville.
Frances graduated from McIntire High School, Charlottesville, in 1952 and went to work for the Virginia Department of Forestry. After moving to Amherst, she was employed by the Alumni Office at Sweet Briar College for many years. She was an active member of the Amherst Presbyterian Church, loved cats and her family’s annual trips to the beach.
The family wishes to thank Home Instead Senior Care, Amedisys Home Health Care, Amherst Presbyterian Church, Heritage Inn, Legacy Hospice, and her many friends and neighbors for their care and support through her many years of poor health.
A funeral service will be conducted, 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Amherst Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Matt Gaventa officiating. Interment will follow at Amherst Cemetery.
The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Friday, October 17, 2014, Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence.
