Born in Amherst, she was the daughter of the late Russell William and Nellie Mae Coffey Crawford of Amherst. She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Gibson. Through God’s mercy, she never knew her son, J. Dean Gibson, Jr., preceded her in death.
Gladys Mae is survived by her daughters, Lisa Gibson and Carolyn Burgess (Paul) of Madison Heights and one grandson, Jacob Burgess of Minnesota. She is also survived by her sister Ruthann Schmitt and brother William “Bill” Crawford, both of Madison Heights.
The family will be forever grateful for her dedicated caregivers Renee Megginson, Sharon Bradley, and PACE Lynchburg. Their tender care allowed her wish of being home. Special appreciation to Ruthann Schmitt for opening her home and helping care for Gladys Mae in her final days.
A memorial service will be held at Whitten Monelison on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service until 5:00. The memorial will honor both Gladys Mae and her son, Dean Gibson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Meals on Wheels of Lynchburg or Lighthouse Baptist Church, Madison Heights, Va.
