John Barry Barry Wood

John Barry Wood, 77, of Madison Heights, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2011 at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Katherine (Kitty) Sweeney Wood; two daughters, Barri Katherine Wood and Cheri Dawn Wood; mother-in-law, Nellie Guill Sweeney; brother, Mark L. Wood; and sister-in-law, Mary B. Wood; and two grand-dogs Beau and Jetta. Barry is survived by twelve nieces and nephews, fifteen great- nieces and nephews and a host of Sweeney Family in-laws and close family friends especially Mac Gowell .

He was born on Monday June 5, 1934 in Lynchburg, a son of the late Lloyd Marcellus Wood and Thelma Higginbotham Wood. He was a retired draftsman of B & W and G.E. Barry was a long time member of Temple Baptist Church.

Barry had a great love for sports and the outdoors. He loved to golf, fish, hunt, play softball, and bowl. He enjoyed going the YMCA and swimming and exercising with his buddies. He also loved to dance. Barry was a fun-loving man, who was always laughing and joking.

Family night will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 6 PM at Whitten Monelison Chapel in Madison Heights. The family wishes to thank those who made the last days of Barry’s life more peaceful, especially Dr. Wolanski, Dr. Bendall, Loretta Gunter and Centra Hospice especially, Vicky Bailey.

A funeral service will be held at Temple Baptist Church on Friday, September 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a graveside service Jonesboro Cemetery in Roseland, Virginia conducted by Pastor J.D. Surbaugh, Jr. A reception will be held at Temple Baptist Church after the burial.
