
Born March 30, 1927, in Elbert, West VA, he was the son of the late Dr. Lawrence and Margaret Hechler Whitney. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret M. Whitney; a sister, Betty Whitney Quinn; and a loving niece, Mary Franklin.
Mr. Whitney was a United States Navy WW II veteran having served in Korea. He was retired from Sears Roebuck, and Co., and was of Catholic faith. He was an adventurous hands-on father and grandfather, and will be forever missed by all who loved him.
Survivors also include his children, Lawrence L. Whitney III and wife Cele, of Myrtle Beach, William C. Whitney and wife Darlene, Robert Whitney and wife Linda, Allison Whitney Bradner, and Cheryl Whitney, all of Danville; and his girls, Wanda M. McCormick and husband Gideon Brand of New York City, Dr. Deborah M. Maxey and husband Gerald, and Marjorie M. Ion, both of Lynchburg; and his sister, Mary Furst, of Smith Mtn. Lake. He was “Pop” to 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, and is also survived by other relatives and friends.
An informal celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2012, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, in Madison Heights.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Madison Heights Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.
