
Lucie Ellis Garland of Amherst, born October 9, 1932, passed away March 8, 2011 surrounded by loved ones following a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Meredith Garland and Eva Patterson Garland.
Lucie was a graduate of Amherst County High School and attended the College of William and Mary. She travelled extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad. Career highlights included several early years working with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, followed by many years as a silver buyer and department manager for Rich's in Atlanta, GA and Columbia, SC. Before retiring to Amherst, she was an innkeeper on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Vesuvius. A member of Ascension Episcopal Church in Amherst since childhood, Lucie devoted many hours to a variety of church activities.
A lifelong student and avid reader across a wide range of subjects, Lucie also found joy in the simple beauty of nature. She will be remembered for her gentle and generous spirit, effortless grace, style, wit, kindness, and humanity towards all, and her particular concern for animals and the most vulnerable. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four siblings, Samuel Garland, Paul Garland, David Garland, and Rosalie Sharp.
Survivors include sisters Eva Lindsay, Sharon Albert, sister-in-law Sandra Garland, and nieces and nephews Rebecca Erdmann, James Lindsay, Samuel Garland, Joanne Garland, Brent Garland, and Robert Sharp, and great niece and nephew Tessa Boyd and Timothy Erdmann.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to Lucie's family of caregivers at Fairmont Crossing Cedar Ridge, whose many years of attentive loving care has meant so much.
Visitors may pay their respects at Whitten Monelison Chapel in Madison Heights, Sunday, March 13, 2011 from 3-5:00 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 14, 2011 in Ascension Episcopal Church in Amherst, followed by a reception. Burial will be private.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Amherst Humane Society, Ascension Episcopal Church in Amherst, or the Alzheimer's Association.
