

He was born in Lynchburg on March 14, 1946, son of the late John Oprey Chapman and Ethel Matthews Chapman.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth M. Chapman; a daughter, Meredith Leigh Chapman; two brothers, John Henry Chapman and C. Michael Chapman and his wife Brenda; two grandchildren, Jocob Phillips and Amber Phillips; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded by in death by a brother, J.O. Chapman.
Richard loved swimming. He was retired from R R Donnelley Company and was a Vietnam War Navy veteran and a member of Lynchburg American Legion Post #16.
A funeral service with military honors provided by American Legion Alta Vista Post #36 and Gretna Post #232, will be held at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Bill Evans officiating. The family will receive friends following the service until 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
