As he went to be home with the Lord, his devoted wife of 40 years was by his side, remaining his steady companion through his final moments.
He was born on February 14, 1952, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to the late Ernest W. Pentecost & Effie Jennings Martin. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by three sisters, Linda Diane Barker, Martha Louise “Stinky” Wright, and Myrtle Ann Pentecost Deaner; and stepsons Paul Ford and Jesse Ford.
Robert attended high school in Sterling, Texas, where he spent time as his father was in the military. After high school, he went into maintenance and contracting, where he excelled in renovating apartments. Through this experience, he was able to start his own business, and there was no project that was too big or too small that he could not tackle with skill and dedication.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Pentecost; his brothers, Michael and David Pentecost; his daughter, Misty Foster and her family; and his stepson, Troy Ayers (Kristinna). Robert was a grandfather to Jennifer Stech, Jessica Lewis, Brittany Gilbert, Kayla Schull, Courtney Lethcoe, Ryan Ford, Justin Ayers, Tarah Ayers, Bryson Ayers, Bella Ayers, and Lilly Ayers. He was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind close family friends, Charlene Cohn, Christy Goad, and Steve Pauley, and he will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews, and other family members and dear friends.
Robert and Margaret spent 30 years living in Florida. The sunshine, water, and pace of life suited him well and became a meaningful part of the life he built there. Florida brought many friendships and memories of a lifetime. He found his greatest joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time fishing, hunting, and golfing. He found peace and purpose in the outdoors or on the water, cherishing the stillness around him. You could often find him watching his favorite westerns, appreciating the timeless stories of grit and loyalty. He especially loved watching the westerns with his good friend Daniel Chase. He enjoyed watching football and was a big Miami Dolphins fan. During NASCAR season, you could find him rooting on Reddick on Sundays.
Robert will be remembered by his kind and helpful nature. Always ready to lend a hand, he took care of whatever needed to be done without hesitation. He was never too busy to help and never turned away from a task that needed doing. Above all, he adored his wife and his two beloved pups, Candy and Hannah, who were constant companions and brought him endless comfort, happiness, and joy. Robert will be deeply missed, and his memory will live on by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Timothy Wilde officiating.
The family would like to thank Centra Hospice, who provided great care and support. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org or Donate Life of Virginia at www.donatelifevirginia.org.
