Robert James Swanson

He was born on November 4, 1932 in Hampton, VA, son of the late Tufve & Ethel Swanson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and one son.

He is survived by his wife of 64½ years Sarah K. Swanson; daughter, Caroll Register (Robert); sons, David Swanson (Cheryl) and Stephen Swanson; daughters, Rebekah Hensley Martin (Greg), Charity Spencer (Trevor), Faith Longoria (Josh) as well as twenty two grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Mr. Swanson, a native of Hampton, VA received his GED in Brevard, NC at the age of 50. As a young man he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and later became a master welder working for the Newport News public school system from which he retired. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Amherst County where they have lived for the past 18 years.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Clifford Baptist Church, 635 Fletchers Level Road, Amherst, VA 24521.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Saturday at Clifford Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Michael Fitzgerald and David Swanson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 3:00 prior to the service at the church. Interment with military honors will be held at a later date.
