Anthony was born in Charleston on March 24, 1973, and spent most of his adult life as a self-employed painter. He enjoyed fishing, roaming the woods and always looking for a new rock to add to his collection. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love for his family and his big heart.
Anthony was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence “Larry” Gatens and his mother, Rosa “Linda” Carpenter Gatens.
He is survived by his daughter, Phoeve Lou Gatens of San Antonio, Texas; sister, Danielle Mullins (Wes) of Dunbar, West Virginia; niece, Tara (Scott) Thomas of South Charleston, West Virginia; two great- nephews, Zander and Avery Thomas also of South Charleston, West Virginia; and many cousins but three who helped him tremendously throughout his life and meant the world to him, Sherry Bledsoe, Billy Fridley and Dewayne Gibson, all of Charleston.
Anthony’s presence will be deeply missed, but he will live on in our memory and the stories shared.
A celebration of Anthony’s life will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at Ken Ellis Memorial Park from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., where family and friends will gather to honor and remember him.
We hope those who knew Anthony will never forget the moments they shared with him, keep his memory alive in their hearts and rejoice in knowing he is finally free.
