I am extremely sadden to hear of Lewis passing.  He was a good friend and co-worker.  If I had any issues with a tree, or to report anyone damaging a tree he would respond promptly.  He had some stories to tell and when he got started you knew you'd be there a while.  He was proud to be a WV Mountaineer and since my mothers family are all in Mercer county, WV, we always had plenty to talk about.  He will be missed, but always remembered.  

When I first started working  for the City of Charlotte, I needed to meet Lewis in the field. A couple of folks had warned me about how tough he was, but in the same breath said how good he was at his job. Being very new, I was completely intimidated by him, and I'm positive we parted that meeting with Lewis thinking what an idiot I was. Fast forward a few years and I was hired for the same position Lewis occupied. I reminded Lewis of our first meeting, and he swore he had no recollection of it. I was glad I hadn't made an impression. From then on the two of us proceed to work together as a team, and became friends. I would leave Lewis chocolate on his desk, and he would bring me hot peppers. He'd start cussing in his office and I'd come help him with his computer. We'd meet for lunch at Price's Chicken Coop, or Brooks'. Lewis was a wealth of knowledge, and I was glad to have someone like him to learn my job from. We spent many afternoons talking about our kids, our past, or work, or peppers, or whatever. He was a loving father, whose kids were more important than anything to him. Lewis went from an intimidating coworker to a friend and respected  colleague. We had each other's backs. I'm honored to have gotten to work with Lewis.  The news of his passing, well... Lewis wasn't good at saying goodbye. He'll be missed.

Our thoughts for comfort are with Lewis’ family and friends during this difficult time. Lewis and I worked together at the City of Charlotte for 6 years. He was a wonderful arborist, calm but firm, and he told the best stories. I always enjoyed hearing him talk about his children- the love he had for them came through so clearly.  Lewis taught me so much and I am grateful for his patience and guidance.  Lewis will be missed. 

Sending prayers for peace and comfort to Lewis' family. Lewis and I worked together at the City of Charlotte for 20 years, the last 8 years before I retired we had offices right next to each other. He was a dedicated employee, an honorable father, and a damn good tree guy. I hired him to remove a very large limb from a pecan tree in my yard years ago. We negotiated a price and when I told him I didn't want the wood, we renegotiated the price (lol). I had errands to run and when I returned home he was gone, the limb was gone, and a very small amount of sawdust was all I could find to prove anything had occurred there. He was a very diligent and proud man. He will be missed by many friends and coworkers.
