Roy was a devoted Christian with a gentle spirit and a servant’s heart. He touched the lives of everyone who knew him. He was kind to all, never judging; always giving unselfishly to anyone in need. He was a Sunday School teacher and led Bible study and worship services at Oakridge Bible Church and Valley Grove United Methodist Church for many years. He had a quick wit and loved to make people laugh. Words fall short in describing how special he was and the impact he made on so many.
Roy was known far and wide for his auto body and mechanic skills, keeping everyone’s cars on the road, running and looking good. Roy was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service and a truck driver for F.H. Wood and Sons.
Roy’s greatest joy in life was his family. He loved being surrounded by the chaos of family get-togethers. He is now reunited with the love of his life and wife of 71 years, Garnet Taylor Summers, his parents, two sisters, Lilly “Violet” Carpenter, and Bernice Buzzard, one brother, Sinnette Summers, and two grandsons, Samuel and Daniel Summers. Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Dale Summers (Carolyn) of Sissonville; his son, Randall Summers (Melissa) of South Charleston; daughters, Cheryl Sprigle (Ralph Michael) of Charleston, Elizabeth “Betsy” Lawton of Charleston, Fran Perry (Tom) of South Charleston, Kaye Townsend (Roger) of Charleston, and Lana Ward (Todd) of North Carolina, as well as nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
2 Timothy 4:6-8 “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me on that day…”.
