Winnie was truly a singular personality. She was part of my life, in one way or other, as long as I can remember. Talented, funny, caring and very outspoken-to the point of bluntness, she leaves a big hole and many very interesting memories. John Mark Poling (Waynesburg, PA).

Ms. Halstead was a brilliant and gifted woman and educator. She grew up here at Coal Fork on Campbell's Creek, attended the Methodist Church at Coal Fork and DuPont High School. Her parents, Beatrice and Micky were great friends of all four of my grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Martin Skiles and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Moss. I had the great privelege of seeing Ms. Halstead and her friend at Moses Automotive in Charleston a few years ago and we talked for hours once each of us discovered who the other was. Her great educational accomplishments in WV and Florida while serving as teacher and principal of several schools can't be understated. She was a very dignified and intelligent lady and will be missed by many relatives, friends and acquaintances. She was a fantastic role model for students and educators alike! She was the best teacher I ever had. She inspired me to love and seek higher education.


She was the Principal of a two-room school called Betty L on Kellys Creek Road, north of Charleston, out in the country.  She would play softball with us at recess. She was firm, but fair, and even tempered.  I had tried to find out about her, in the age before computers.  My goal was to tell her what she meant to me and to thank her for her example.  I finally got my wish. She was at our local Foodland store and I got to tell her.  I think that was last year or maybe two.  God bless you Ms. Halstead.  I love you.
