
Born in Metuchen, NJ, to the late William and Agnes (nee Ostergaard) Nelson, Bruce resided in Surf City, NJ, and Cape Coral, FL, before moving to Santee, SC.
Bruce graduated from Woodbridge High School in 1941 and thereafter Rutgers University. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. During his career, Bruce worked as an engineer who specialized in building and insuring gas pipelines. In addition to serving as Mayor of Surf City, Bruce traveled extensively for both work and pleasure. Bruce enjoyed being an airplane pilot and was proud of his Danish heritage. He will be remembered for being a caring and devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Husband of the late Muriel Nelson, Bruce is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Bonnie Nelson of Cedar Run, NJ, and a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Michael Coyne of Philadelphia, PA; Grandchildren Joshua Bruce Nelson of Asbury Park, Nhan La of Manahawkin, NJ, Katie and Jeffrey Mannion, David Coyne and his fiancée Sarah Hoffman, of Philadelphia, Rachel Coyne of Surf City, and a great grandson, Tadhg Nelson Mannion.
Funeral services are, Tuesday, July 30th 12:00 PM at the Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Drive, Manahawkin, NJ. Calling hours are from 10:00Am until the time of services at the Funeral Home.
Burial will be private.
