

George B. Rowe AGE: 95 • Barnegat George Barron Rowe, of Barnegat, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012. He was 95. He was born in Bayonne in 1916, the third of six children born to Richard and Annie Barron Rowe. George was raised on Staten Island and in 1937 while serving in the N.Y. Cavalry, he met the late Mary Alice Pearson. They married in 1941 and shared 70 wonderful years and parented five children. He became grandfather to 16 grandchildren and great-grandfather to 24, uncle to many nieces and nephews and treasured friend to many. He was loved. George had exciting careers. In 1939, he joined the NYC Fire Department. During WW ll, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, after pilot training he was assigned with the 8th Air Force in England and flew 35 missions over Europe as a B-17 pilot. After discharge in late 1945, he returned to the NYC Fire Department from which he retired in 1962 as a captain of an engine company. He next worked with the U.S. Dept. of Labor in a position that brought him frequently to the Caribbean, he retired in 1982. In retirement, George was a member of the Barnegat VFW Post serving as chaplain. He was an active member of St. Mary's Parish, Barnegat. A viewing for friends and family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 at Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Drive, Manahawkin. George's funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at St. Mary's Church in Barnegat. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Birthright of Ocean County, 36 W.
