Herbert W. Born, age 86 died after a short illness at 12:47 a.m. on Thursday, May 12 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He was attended by his daughter, Maria and he died peacefully. Herb was born in a house on 9th street in Ship Bottom to Elizabeth Jane (Ewing) and Frederick Born. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by 2 older brothers, Frederick (d. Korean War) and Louis (d. 1987). Herb graduated from the Barnegat High School (now the Elizabeth Edwards School) in 1954. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army for 2 years and was stationed at Fort Dix, in Texas and New Mexico. Herb is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia (Perugini) and 3 children, Maria (m. Anthony Widmer), Justin and Timothy (m. Adrienne (Lyons) and granddaughter, Alison Widmer. Herb is also survived by his younger sister, Patricia (Bazel), brother-in-law Edward Perugini (Betsy), brother-in-law Robert Perugini along with nieces and nephews, Bonnie (Phillips) Jay Bazel, Jack Bazel, Kathleen Chenman (Perugini), Michael Perugini, Robert Perugini, Robert Perurgini, Lori DeMatte (Perugini) and Jill Perugini along with great nieces and nephews, Barry Chenman, Daniel Chenman, Michael Perugini, Kate Perugini and Kelsey DeMatte. Herb was employed for 32 years by the New Jersey Natural Gas Company and he was a member of the Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire Company for many years. Herb was a great friend and neighbor always willing to lend a hand and assist anyone in trouble. Herb will be fondly remembered for holding conversation sessions in his garage and the vast numbers of friends who would stop by to chat. Herb enjoyed riding his bike around town, walking on the beach and the boulevard. Herb loved cars and had an encyclopedic knowledge of the year, make and model of almost all cars. Herb loved to watch racing; Martin Truex Jr. was one of his favorite drivers, second only to Richard Petty. Herb loved classic country and folk music and Johnny Cash was his favorite artist along with Charlie Pride. Herb had a great sense of humor and always had an interesting story to relate. Herb was loved for his willingness to always lend a helping hand or a sympathetic ear and he will be dearly missed. A visitation for Herbert will be held Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Thos. L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Drive, Manahawkin, NJ 08050. A visitation will occur Friday, May 20, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Thos. L. Shinn Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to a repast at the Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire Company House on Friday from 1-4pm. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Born family.
