Bert Ellentuck, his wife Shan, and 2-1/2 children arrived in Roosevelt in 1957 and thought they had found Nirvana. Good house, good town, good friends, and lots of Democrats. 2-1/2 children soon became four – Jeff, Kin, Tamar, and Rebecca, all educated by devoted teachers in RPS.
Bert was a licensed architect and found work in Princeton, Roosevelt, and Trenton. He was always ready to help Roosevelt residents in remodeling or adding to their houses.
Shan plunged into Roosevelt activities followed by a career writing and illustrating children’s books. In addition to a successful career as an author, she and a friend, Jim Springer, founded the firm of Ellentuck and Springer in Princeton, a successful national public relations firm that won numerous awards.
Bert maintained a small practice in Roosevelt and Princeton. The firm expanded into NJ colleges, hospitals, homes, and developments. He also partnered with Ben Shahn in the design of the Roosevelt memorial. He ended his working career as the Vice President for facilities at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ. Bert also participated in the design and construction of Ramapo College, a New Jersey State college.
Bert and Shan retired and spent many happy days going to craft schools and in their NY apartment, as well as traveling throughout America and Europe. (Viva Italia). They will be buried in the Roosevelt cemetery in the company of their friends.
The period of mourning will be observed at his residence on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bert's memory may be made to Planned Parenthood (www.plannedparenthood.org).
