Growing up in Flatbush, Brooklyn, Michael was an avid sportsman, relished playing basketball, baseball, paddleball, paddle tennis and hanging out in Coney Island eating chow mein on a bun at Nathan’s with his friends. Being a 200 Bowler earned him many trophies.
After graduating from Jamaica High School, Michael joined his father as an “A” Journeyman Electrician in the IBEW Local #3. The next time you’re in NYC, look up and around and you’ll see the bright lights illuminated from many iconic buildings that Michael wired.
Michael electrified the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows; at 30 Rock he lit the set of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He also held a special assignment in David Rockefeller’s private office.
When several floors of the Esso building collapsed, Michael narrowly escaped. Downtown came calling to wire the World Trade Center and Chase Manhattan Bank in the Financial District, then powering up the West Side’s Jacob Javits Convention Center.
Michael was so proud of being an electrician, he signed his kids and nephew up to be in the Summer College Apprenticeship program.
Camping with Harriet’s Girl Scout Troop made his weekends, as did selling “Designer Jeans” and Harriet’s hand-painted T-shirts at Englishtown Auction. Together, Michael and his son Alan, built a doghouse that lasted outside for 35 years, which outlasted Cognac.
After 45 years in the IBEW, Michael retired in 2000. Traveling around the country, Europe, Caribbean, and Israel with Harriet, were major highlights. They wintered in Florida where he was happy playing ball and enjoying the good life with his family and friends.
Michael is survived by his wife Harriet Lotenberg; daughter Jill Lotenberg; son Alan Lotenberg; brother Gary Lotenberg and his wife Shelley; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mr. Lotenberg was preceded in death by his parents Irving and Jeanne Lotenberg and sister Marlene Moster.
