Holy Toledo! I just learned of this recently and wanted to convey my condolences to the family, especially Les, who though I haven't seen in decades, knows how far back my friendship was with Stuey. He being on Lenox and I on Belmont made it possible to hang out together and get in trouble together all the time for at 10 years. We were always amazed by the koala bear or kinkachu in the greenhouse at McKay Orchids. I think the funniest story involved our curiosity about cigarettes. One day, Stu's mom called my mom and pretty much scolded my mom, "Did you know Freddy was giving Stuart smoking lessons ???" It was true. I grabbed a couple of Kents from my parents' coffee table and a pack of matches and met Stuey at the greenhouse where we lit up, coughed a lot and then tossed 'em" My prayers. R.I.P. dude,

In my early years, Stuey was my best friend. We subscribed to Andy Devine's "Pals stick together".. part of a Scotch tape ad. Nevertheless, we were fearless and he was bigger than me, so he was like my body guard.  My stories are endless in regards to our friendship in our early years. As I write this, my heart hurts and I feel a tremble coming on. To all those from Edgewood Ave. checking in, my prayers.

When I saw Stu at night taking Gloria for a walk in his scooter (or was Gloria taking him for a walk), Gloria would always greet my dog Baxter with her bark.  I would caution Stu to be careful about the cars zooming by.  Baxter and I will miss him.

We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Stuart Elfenbein. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of need. May God grant you strength, comfort and peace.

I went to Duck's funeral today. I didn't know Stu outside of the Y Day camp and the last time I saw him was when the 2010 reunion was being planned. Coincidentally, Duck was at Rutt's while we were having a planning meeting.

Honestly, he didn't recognize me, nor I him, until someone on the planning committee "introduced" me to him. That was the last time I saw Stu.

I mention that as "backstory" to this. When Bette Gilbert posted yesterday that Stu had died, I gasped. I was with some non-camp people who asked what was wrong and all I said was "Duck died" (and then realized I needed to explain who (and what) "Duck" was :)

When I said I was planning to go to the funeral, I was asked "you haven't seen this person in 7 years, he didn't remember you and you're going to the funeral?" I immediately answered "Of course I'm going."
It took me until today, chatting with Lisa Raphael in the car, to realize it. Non-Camp folks just don't get it. They don't understand what comes easily and naturally to us "campers." Of course I was going to Duck's funeral. Les Elfenbein was my Jr. Counselor. How could I not go??? Duck was part of my camp family.

About a year ago, I was in a restaurant with my parents in Montclair. Les was there - I didn't see him, but he came up to us, said hello and "re"introduced himself to my parents. Of course I had to remind them that Les was my counselor sometime in the mid 70s - only 40 years ago or so. 40 years yet, still he came over to say hello.

That's the deal folks. Non Camp people may never understand, Campers will get it instantly.
Rest In Peace, Duck.


In loving memory of a wonderful man. We will love you and miss you always. Stu was like an Uncle to me. He was always laughing and smiling. I will never forget him and his positive presence. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Elfenbein family.
