Gabriel Daniel Orlando (known to his family and friends as “Gabe” “Gramps” or “Papa Gab”) was a beloved grandfather, father, brother, and husband during his incredible 92 years of life. Gabe was called home to God on April 20, 2022 surrounded by his family.
Gabe was born on October 5, 1929, to Pietro and Rose Orlando in Jersey City, NJ. Gabe was one of three children (siblings: Louis and Marion). Gabe attended St. Michael's High School in Jersey City where he ran track and played baseball. After graduating from high school, Gabe enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his time in the Navy, he served aboard the U.S.S. Randell and fought in the Korean War. After Gabe was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, he began his career as a firefighter for the Jersey City Fire Department. Gabe climbed the ranks and became Battalion Chief. Gabe served on the Jersey City Fire Department for 38 years before retiring in 1991.
In 1950, Gabe met the love of his life, Rose. He and Rose had three children: Peter, Barbara, and Joanne. Gabe loved his family and friends more than anything (even more than golf and chocolate cake). Gabe was predeceased by his parents, Pietro and Rose Orlando. He is survived by his wife, Rose Orlando and their three children: Peter Orlando, of Belmar, NJ; Barbara Andersen, of Bradley Beach, NJ; Joanne Maestri and her husband, Joe, of Brick, NJ. He leaves behind his grandchildren: Jessica (and her husband, Dan), Vanessa (and her husband, Currie), Allyson (and her boyfriend, Wyatt) and Kelsey (and her girlfriend, Karina); and two great-grandchildren: Madilyn and Daniel. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Marion Ring, of Montrose, CO., and his brother, Louis Orlando, of Paramus, NJ. He also leaves many other family members, dear friends, and furry grandchildren who will sadly miss him.
Gabe will be fondly remembered for his love of golf, chocolate cake, and his devotion to his family.
Services will be held at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home (3010 Ridgeway Rd. Manchester, NJ) on Monday, April 25th at 2P-4P & 6P-8P. Gabe will be laid to rest at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle – Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery (350 Provinceline Rd. Wrightstown, NJ) on Tuesday, April 26th at 11:00A. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The NJ FMBA Foundation, an organization Gabe felt strongly about.
